Non-verbal reasoning for the 11+: a straight-talking guide for parents

I'm Anmol. I tutor Maths and non-verbal reasoning one-to-one online, and NVR is the part parents worry about most. Some of them have taken to calling me "the KING of NVR", which makes me laugh, but I'll take it. This guide is everything I'd tell you over a first phone call: what the subject actually is, where it turns up, the question types your child will face, and why it's more learnable than almost anything else in the exam.

In short: non-verbal reasoning is problem-solving with shapes and pictures instead of words. In the 11+ and most UK entrance exams, children spot patterns, sequences, rotations and codes hidden in diagrams, with no reading involved. It measures how a child thinks rather than what they've learned, which is exactly why grammar and independent schools lean on it so heavily.

What is non-verbal reasoning?

It's a test of visual logic. Your child looks at a set of shapes, works out the rule connecting them, then applies that rule to find an answer. Nothing to read. No vocabulary to know. No general knowledge required.

That last point matters. A child who struggles with English can be brilliant at NVR, and a strong reader can find it baffling at first. The skill sits apart from the rest of the curriculum.

People often lump it together with spatial reasoning, and there's real overlap. The simple split: NVR is mostly about flat, 2D patterns, while spatial reasoning asks a child to fold, rotate and rebuild shapes in three dimensions in their head. Exam boards test both, sometimes under the same heading.

It's the opposite number to verbal reasoning, which does the same job of testing logic but uses words, letters and language puzzles. Most 11+ exams sample both, so no single type of thinker has an unfair edge.

Where non-verbal reasoning shows up

NVR isn't one exam. It's a thread running through nearly every selective route into UK secondary school. Here's where you'll meet it:

  • The 11+ (grammar schools). Most grammar schools use papers from GL Assessment or similar formats, and NVR is a core component alongside maths, English and verbal reasoning. GL's NVR content leans on a repeatable, well-defined set of question types, which is good news for anyone willing to practise. Formats vary by county and consortium, so always check what your target school actually sets.
  • CAT4. The Cognitive Abilities Test from GL Assessment is used by thousands of secondary and independent schools, usually in Year 7, and often as part of admissions. It has four batteries — verbal, quantitative, non-verbal and spatial reasoning — and two of those four are essentially the subject we're discussing.
  • ISEB Common Pre-Test. The gateway to a lot of top independent senior schools. It's online, adaptive and multiple-choice, and non-verbal reasoning is one of its four sections. The ISEB framework splits NVR into two flavours: analysing 2D figures for patterns, and manipulating 3D figures to picture them differently.
  • UKiset. Used by many independent schools to assess international applicants, its reasoning module includes NVR alongside verbal and mathematical reasoning, testing pattern completion and visual logic.

Four different exams, one underlying skill. Learn it well and you're not preparing for a single test — you're preparing for the whole selective landscape.

The main question types

Here's the reassuring part. Across all these exams, NVR questions fall into a fairly small set of recognisable families. Learn to spot the family and you're halfway to the answer.

  • Series and sequences — a row of shapes changes step by step; your child works out the pattern and picks what comes next.
  • Analogies — "shape A is to shape B as shape C is to…?" Spot how the first pair relates, then apply the same change to the second.
  • Odd one out — four shapes share a rule; one breaks it. Find the rebel.
  • Matrices and grids — a grid with one cell missing. Work out the rule running across and down, then fill the gap.
  • Rotations — the same shape turned by a quarter, half or three-quarter turn. Deceptively hard under time pressure.
  • Reflections — a shape flipped as if in a mirror. Children often confuse these with rotations, which is where marks leak away.
  • Codes — each shape is tagged with letters that stand for its features. Crack the link between letter and feature, then code a new shape.
  • Nets and cubes — a flat, unfolded shape (a "net") that folds up into a 3D solid. Your child pictures the fold in their head to work out which faces end up next to each other, or which finished cube a given net makes. Symbols on the faces make it trickier, because a pattern that looks right can be mirrored or upside down once it's folded.
  • 3D and spatial reasoning — the same visual logic taken into three dimensions: rotating a solid in your mind, matching an object to how it looks from a different angle, or counting the hidden blocks in a stack. It's a step up from flat 2D pattern work, and it's exactly what the spatial battery in CAT4 and the 3D questions in the ISEB pre-test are testing.

Different publishers count these slightly differently, and some break them into a dozen or more sub-types. The families above cover what you'll actually see.

Why children find it hard, and why that's good news

Here's my honest opinion after years of teaching it: NVR feels hard because it's unfamiliar, not because it's difficult.

Think about it. Your child spends years at school reading, writing and doing sums. Almost no time is spent staring at abstract shapes deciding whether one has been rotated or reflected. So the first time they see an NVR paper, it looks like an alien language. Panic sets in. Scores are low.

That's the trap parents fall into. They see a poor first score and decide their child "isn't a shapes person". Nonsense. What they're really seeing is a child who's never been taught the rules of a game they're being asked to play.

And this is the part I love about teaching NVR. Because it's rarely taught in school, there's enormous room to improve. Once a child learns to check systematically — for rotation, then reflection, then a change in shading, then a change in number — the fog lifts. I've watched children go from guessing to genuinely enjoying it in a handful of lessons. Scores climb fast because you're starting from a low base of familiarity, not low ability.

Verbal reasoning and maths take years to build. NVR rewards focused practice in weeks. That's a gift, and most families don't realise it.

How I help with non-verbal reasoning

I teach NVR one-to-one, online, and I keep it structured. We take the question families one at a time, drill each until the method is automatic, then rebuild them into full timed papers so exam pace stops being scary.

The one-to-one part matters more here than in almost any subject. NVR mistakes are usually invisible to a parent marking at home, because the child got the wrong answer for a reason you can't see from the page. Sitting with a child, I can hear the flawed logic as it happens and correct the method, not just the answer. That's the difference between a child who memorises answers and one who can solve a question they've never met before — the only skill the exam actually rewards.

Common questions

Can non-verbal reasoning really be improved, or are some children just "not visual"?

It can absolutely be improved, and I'd be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise. Because NVR is barely touched in the school curriculum, most children start from near-zero familiarity, so there's huge headroom. With the right method and regular practice, scores rise quickly. Natural aptitude helps, but preparation matters far more than people assume.

When should we start preparing for 11+ NVR?

For a Year 6 exam, starting in Year 5 gives comfortable, low-stress room to cover every question type properly. You can make real progress in a few focused months if you begin later, since NVR responds fast to targeted work — but earlier means calmer, without the last-minute cramming.

What's the difference between non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning?

They're close cousins. NVR is mostly 2D pattern logic, spotting how flat shapes change. Spatial reasoning adds a third dimension, asking your child to fold nets, rotate solids and picture objects from new angles in their head. Exams like CAT4 and the ISEB pre-test test both, sometimes within the same section.

Do we need to know which exam board our school uses?

Yes, and it's worth pinning down early. GL Assessment, the ISEB pre-test and CAT4 overlap heavily in the core skills but differ in format, timing and how questions are presented on screen or paper. The underlying skill is the same, so good preparation transfers, but knowing the exact format lets us rehearse the real thing.
